Antique Chest of Drawers #0779
Scumbled Beech Chest of Drawers, circa 1875
43" wide x 20" deep x 35" high
In Victorian times, for those who could not afford real mahogany, scumbled furniture was a
popular alternative. Scumbling is painting a piece of furniture to look like an expensive
hardwood.
This chest has worn to a very mellow appearance; the top and side show signs of wear and
rubbing (see picture), while the front is in unusually good condition. It is completely
original with turned beech knobs. Although the top does show its age, overall it is a
very pleasing piece and would certainly not be out of place in any interiors magazine.
$575.

Scumbling is painting a piece of furniture to make it appear more expensive.
This beech chest of drawers is scumbled to look as though its made from a fruitwood
(possibly cherry or pear) and is even "inlaid" with a faux ebony banding around each drawer.
